The Arts in Racine are Flourishing

Wustum Fine Art Museum

Create Uptown Racineacine is thick with artists and galleries. They have moved into empty spaces, turning former factories into lofts and studios. A result is a gritty art town, not a cute, generic, you-could-be-anywhere stage set. Pabst Blue Ribbon signs mark taverns, but now there is a sushi restaurant, too.

The New York Times and the rest of the world are starting to discover what people around here already know–Racine is a great place for art.

It's a great place to make art, sell art, buy art, be in the arts, and just enjoy art.

For a city its size, Racine has an incredible array of arts groups, galleries, schools, museums, working artists, and art fairs.

The Uptown Racine Arts District will be a natural and welcome addition to this already lively scene.

Right now the Uptown Racine Arts District is a blank canvas. But with a helping hand from the city and county, artists will be encouraged to do what they do best–create something cool and beautiful and worth talking about. They will Create Uptown Racine.

We've pulled together a few web sites to give you a taste of the arts in Racine.

Frank Lloyd Wright in Racine

In the 1930s, architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the new corporate offices and research buildings for the Johnson Wax Company (now named S.C. Johnson). These were the first of several magnificent buildings and homes Wright designed in the Racine community. All of Wright's structures remain lovingly cared for and visiting Racine to see and tour them has become a pilgrimage for his many fans. Racine's daily newpaper, The Journal Times, put together this online tribute to Wright's presence in Racine.
